Cittadella

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 19,956 · Postal code: 35013

In the 13th century, Padua established a fortified military outpost to defend its territories, laying the foundation for what is now Cittadella. Today, this Veneto municipality of nearly 20,000 residents remains structurally defined by its defensive origins.

The defining feature of the town is its fully restored medieval wall. Stretching 1,461 meters in circumference, the circular fortification encloses a historic center roughly 450 meters in diameter. Visitors enter through one of four original gates, aligned with the points of the compass, stepping directly into an exceptionally preserved piece of military history. The parapet walkway can be walked in full — a complete circuit of the town from atop its walls.
