In 1239 the emperor Frederick II, a guest of the Paduans for some months, went hunting precisely here, and the castle the Dalesmanini owned at Noventa was probably the dwelling of Isabella, his wife. A century later the largest landowner of the place was Enrico Scrovegni, the banker of the chapel frescoed by Giotto: he had bought the estates that had been the Dalesmanini's, and when in 1331 he was exiled to Venice his fief passed to the Venetian Niccolò Foscari. The name, on the other hand, is older and humbler: Noventa appears in Paduan documents from 918 and seems to come from Nova or Novale, that is land recently brought under cultivation — the land wrested from the marshes of the Brenta.

Here too the river changed its course. Until 1854, when the Taglio di San Vito was dug, the Brenta ran between Ponte di Brenta and Stra along what is today the boundary with Vigonza, behind the villas Valmarana and Todeschini; then it took its present course. The port is documented from 1095, and on the Piovego canal, dug by the free comune of Padua between 1209 and 1210, there was a single-arched bridge at the end of a small bottle-shaped basin in which the bricole were driven, the posts of the Venetian lagoon: the bridge with locks one sees today is of 1919, and of the old one, fallen into disuse and then demolished, the access steps can still be made out along the left bank. The villas, taking up the ground, are the reason Noventa has never had a proper centre.
