Solesino

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 7,180 · Postal code: 35047

On the arms of Solesino there is a wavy band: it is the Adige, which used to run through here and went away in 589, when a legendary flood changed its course. The village still remembers it, fourteen centuries later. The crenellated tower is the castle that Ezzelino III da Romano destroyed in 1249, and the trees are the mulberries of the silkworms.

The name first appears in 944. Solesino belonged to the county of Monselice, then to the marquises of Este, then to the Scaligeri, the Carraresi and finally to Venice, which took it in 1405. Alessandro Tassoni names it in La secchia rapita, the mock-heroic poem of 1622.
