The names here count miles and peoples: Rubano is thought to stand at the fifth mile from Padua on the via Gallica, and comes from Rubianus, the estate of a Rubius, perhaps a legionary. Sarmeola, instead, carries the Sarmatians with it — the horsemen who in the fifth century guarded the city's western border.
The documents come after the year 1000: Sarmeola in 1026, Rubano in 1073, Villaguattera in 1191. The old church of Rubano, from the late thirteenth century, is the oldest building still standing and today serves as the municipal auditorium; at Villaguattera the bell tower remains, where in the nineteenth century a date could still be read, 1075. There are 15,669 residents.
