Saint Mary Assumed into Heaven, patron of the Renaissance Arch
📅 Every year, on 15 August
Saccolongo celebrates Saint Mary Assumed into Heaven on 15 August, in the church dedicated to her.
Saccolongo has 4,934 inhabitants on the Bacchiglione, west of Padua, and the name comes from the Latin saccus: either the pockets the river left behind when it flooded, or the place of the royal demesne where tributes had been collected since Lombard times. The main village was born around the year one thousand with the monastery of Santa Maria, founded by the Benedictines of Santa Giustina to reclaim an uninhabited marsh; the hamlet of Creola is far older, because there the Tesina flows into the Bacchiglione and there was a trading port.
In the riverbed, in 1950, a dugout canoe came to light, hollowed out of a trunk at the end of the second millennium before Christ: today it is in the Museo Civico of Padua and it has ended up on the coat of arms as well, together with two bezants for the Lombard coinage and an earthenware pot for Creola, which is called that from creta ola, where the pots were made. In 1826 the parish priest noted that only a minority of children turned up for the lessons of the new school: the others were already in the fields.
