Veggiano

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,543 · Postal code: 35030

Veggiano has 4,543 inhabitants in the plain west of Padua. What is known of this land is that it was inhabited long before the Romans: out of the river Bacchiglione came two Palaeoveneto dugout canoes, hollowed out of tree trunks, which can be seen today in the museum of the castle of San Martino della Vaneza, just over the municipal boundary. In Roman times Veggiano counted enough to have a temple dedicated to Janus.

For centuries afterwards it was border land: the line dividing the Paduans from the Vicentines ran through here, and the stronghold of the latter was the castle of Montegalda, not far off. That war ended with a stroke that set out from this very place: a surprise assault moved from Veggiano and took the castle for the Paduans, once and for all. After that the village followed the fortunes of the whole territory, first under the Republic of Venice and then, with unification, in the Kingdom of Italy. Today the comune is made of three centres, each with its church: Veggiano with Sant'Andrea, Santa Maria with the Nativity of the Virgin and Trambacche with San Lorenzo.
