Santa Giustina in Colle

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 7,131 · Postal code: 35010

The village was called Tergola, like the river that runs through it and that has kept the name. Santa Giustina in Colle appears instead in 1188, as Sancta Iustina in Collo, from the pieve built on an earthwork that had perhaps been a fortification. There are alternative explanations, less believed: collo as a package of goods, hence a customs post; the incolae, that is the farmers; and a mistranscription of Sancta Justina in coelo, Saint Justina in heaven.

At the end of the war, during the German retreat, twenty-four inhabitants were massacred: for this the municipality holds the silver medal for civil merit. Across the territory today runs the Ostiglia cycle path, which follows the line of a military railway between Treviso and Ostiglia, abandoned after the bombings of 1944 and 1945 and turned into a cycle route in 2012.
