Italian cooperative credit was born here: in 1883 Leone Wollemborg and thirty-two associates founded at Loreggia the first rural savings bank in Italy, looking to the German example of Raiffeisen. The idea was simple and new: to lend money to those without collateral, that is to farmers, who otherwise ended up in the hands of usurers. After Loreggia others opened in Veneto and Tuscany.

Much earlier, in 1463, a document of the rector of Padua describes the little hospital of San Rocco: eight beds, administered by the parish priest but with accounts kept separate from the parish's, for lepers and passing pilgrims, and later for the sick of the village. The name of Loreggia first appears in a diploma of the emperor Otto I, in 972.
