Feast of San Bartolomeo Apostolo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August Papozze, a municipality of 1,645 inhabitants in the province of Rovigo, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo the apostle.
The name comes from a man: in 1255 a Ferrarese, Tebaldino known as Papozzo, sold these lands to the Querini of Venice, and the place took its name from him. This is the Delta, low reclaimed ground a few kilometres from the Po; in the flood meadow of Panarella there is a WWF oasis.
In that same meadow, after the war, a group of friends led by the linguist Luigi Salvini founded a republic for fun, the Tamisiana Repubblica di Bosgattia: it lasted some ten years, moved onto an islet in the middle of the river, and even struck a paper currency of its own, the çievaloro, worth five lire. The museum that tells its story is at corte Milana.
