On the Roman road between Hatria, that is Adria, and Triginta, that is Trecenta, this was the place where horses were changed at the seventh mile, and it was called Cabellum: the other village took its name from the thirtieth. Towards the sixth century some Benedictines built an abbey here on the highest point, to stay out of the floods, and began to raise banks: one of those banks is still called the Argine dei Frati, the friars' bank.

In the monastery lived a Saxon monk, brother Beda, who arrived in 874 and died here in 883, and was later made a saint: he is not the English Bede, the Venerable, with whom he is often confused. At Magnolina, on the other hand, the little church of the Beata Vergine della Salute is an old dance hall, put right after the war and opened for worship because the village was far off.
