Rovigo RO

Region: Veneto · 50 towns · Population: 242,349

Rovigo covers less than 1,900 square kilometres, and in that narrow band the province manages to touch the Adriatic to the east, the Ferrara plain of Emilia-Romagna to the south and Lombardy's Mantua country to the south-west. It is the southern edge of the Veneto, flat the whole way, with Verona, Padua and Venice to the north. 50 municipalities, a little over 240,000 people, and a capital of some fifty thousand.

The city of Rovigo takes half a day on foot and does not pretend otherwise. Adria, the second town, already faces the sea. Further east the land frays into water around Porto Viro, Porto Tolle and Rosolina, where the coastline is more a negotiation than a line. Inland, Lendinara and Badia Polesine stand for the farming Polesine, the local name for this country. Cross it slowly or you will miss it.
