Between the Adige and the Po, Rovigo is the capital of the Polesine: a land of water and reclamation, table-flat and therefore perfect for cycling. The two surviving medieval towers — the Donà among Italy's tallest — and the parlour squares of Vittorio Emanuele and Garibaldi draw a compact centre; the Rotonda temple hides a surprising seventeenth-century painting cycle.
Palazzo Roverella has made the town a stage for major exhibitions. To the south, the Po Delta — a UNESCO biosphere reserve — opens lagoons, fishing valleys and bird-filled skies: slow tourism here is no slogan.
