San Martino di Venezze

Province: Rovigo · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,035 · Postal code: 45030

The village's history was written by the Adige, which closes it off to the north. Two ruinous floods, in 1844 and in 1882, and after the breach of 1882 an emigration to South America began that only stopped in the early twenties. Then in 1951, after the flood of the Po, another generation left, this time for the factories of the industrial triangle: from then on the village kept emptying.

The full name came later: having entered the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, the comune added to San Martino the specification «di Venezze». The business of the coat of arms is curious, because the royal decree of 1928 granted a battlemented castle with three silver towers, but the comune uses instead Saint Martin on horseback cutting his cloak to give it to the naked man. In the centre, on the right bank of the Adige, the eighteenth-century parish church has a visibly leaning bell tower.
