Anguillara Veneta

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,594 · Postal code: 35022

Anguillara Veneta has 4,594 inhabitants in the Padua plain, on the bank of the Adige. The name in all likelihood comes from the eels, which are also on the town's coat of arms: they serve to recall that before the reclamation this land was a stretch of ponds and marshes. The work of draining it began in 1557, with the cutting of the old embankment of the Gorzone, and was finished only three centuries later.

On the coat of arms, though, there is also a less predictable story. In the last phase of the war against Venice, the Carraresi, lords of Padua, requisitioned the goods of the basilica of Sant'Antonio to pay their soldiers. They lost all the same, and in 1405, by way of reparation, the Veneranda Arca del Santo was assigned the lands of Anguillara: it owned them until 1974, that is for five centuries and a half. Today these fields grow mostly maize and wheat, but the thing the town is proudest of is the sweet potato, which has its own festival every year.
