Taglio di Po

Province: Rovigo · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,495 · Postal code: 45019

On the arms of Taglio di Po there is a blind man pointing at a spot on the map. He is Luigi Groto, the Blind Man of Adria, who on 17 November 1569 persuaded the Venetian Senate to divert the river: the Latin motto says that he who had been deprived of light saw with his mind. The work, the cut of Porto Viro, was carried out between 1600 and 1604 and changed the shape of the delta.

The town was born of that cut, and bears its name. Later floods forced it to move from the low ground to a higher strip between two ancient sand dunes; the 45th parallel, halfway between the pole and the equator, passes just south of the centre. In the former pumping station of Ca' Vendramin there is now the regional museum of land reclamation.

Patron saint festival

Feast of Saint Francis

📅 Every year, on 4 October

On 4 October Taglio di Po celebrates its patron Saint Francis; the town also honours the Madonna del Vaiolo, carried in procession every 27 January in memory of 1887, when her intercession was believed to have stopped a smallpox epidemic.
