Loreo

Province: Rovigo · Region: Veneto · Population: 3,568 · Postal code: 45017

The name comes from lauretum, the laurel grove, and passed through Lauredo, Loreto and Loredo before settling. Venice, for its part, is written into the town plan: Loreo is the only municipality in its province to have calli, running from the old canal Naviglio between porticoed buildings, and the dialect here resembles Venetian far more than that of villages a few kilometres away. This is no accident: on the fourth of October 1094 a military pact granted Loreo privileges of autonomy in exchange for defending the Republic's southern border against the duchy of Ferrara.

That job ended up on the coat of arms. The red castle with three towers carries above its gate five letters, C.L.F.P.A., which stand for Castrum Laureti Fortiter Pugnavit Adrienses: the castle of Loreo fought bravely against the men of Adria. And fight it did: occupied by the Genoese in 1379 during the war of Chioggia, stormed again in 1510 in the war of the League of Cambrai. Recent history, by contrast, is made of separations: Rosolina left in 1835, came back under Loreo in 1929 and broke away for good in 1948; then the flood of 1951 halved the population.
