Saint Andrew the Apostle, patron among the Venetian villas
📅 Every year, on 30 November
Codognè celebrates Saint Andrew the Apostle on 30 November.
Codognè has 5,311 inhabitants in the plain between the Livenza and the Monticano, where the springs draw the landscape of the palù. The name comes from the Latin cotoneum, the quince tree, with the suffix that marks a stand of plants: Codognè is a quince grove, and the pom codogno is still grown here, with specimens that have come up wild. In the square before the church of Sant'Andrea stands a monumental plane tree twenty-six metres tall, one of the few protected in the province of Treviso.
The church appears for the first time in 1328, when it was a simple chapel dependent on the pieve of Fontanelle; its present look, Palladian in inspiration, comes from restorations finished in 1825. Between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century two weighty guests came through: Napoleon, passing during the battle of the Camolli, and Ugo Foscolo, who stayed at Villa Toderini and wrote some sonnets there.
