The name comes from the Goths: Godega reflects the adjective gothicus and recalls the settlement that people made here around the fifth century, as also happens with Castello di Godego and with Goito. The first mention is from 972, in a document speaking of the circuit of Gudaga. The second part of the name, on the other hand, is very recent and was born of a confusion that had to be sorted out: in 1867 a royal decree added «di Sant'Urbano» so as not to muddle this municipality with Godego, which on the same occasion became Castello di Godego. Sant'Urbano, for the record, is a minor locality between the main village and Pianzano.
The old quarter took shape in the thirteenth century around a well, which is called the Pozzo della Regola and is still there, restored in 2004. The Regola was the assembly of the heads of household over twenty-five, which met several times a year to decide on administration, common works and public order: you went to the well and you voted. From the same period comes the first written record of the Antica Fiera, already described then as something held «from time immemorial»: it was the cattle market, and it is still held in the first week of March.
