Saint John the Baptist, patron of the land of Tezze di Piave
📅 Every year, on 24 June
Vazzola celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June, in the church dedicated to him.
Vazzola appears for the first time in 1322, but written Lavaçola. According to Dante Olivieri it comes from the Latin labes, ruin or landslip; then the first syllable was taken for an article — la Vazzola — and got lost along the way. The village mislaid its own name a piece at a time.
At Visnà, in the church of San Martino, there is a wooden choir of 1710 that is worth the journey: twelve walnut stalls with the saint's stories carved into their backs, taken mostly from the Golden Legend, and above them the small statues of Christ and the twelve apostles. It was made by Antonio Pigatti of Colle Umberto with his son Giovanni and the joiner Giacomo Rossetti. One of the stalls, though, is not a stall: the fourth on the right-hand wall has no seat, because it is the door of the sacristy. The church that holds it was rebuilt for the fourth time in 1921, after the First World War.
