On 26 December 1917 the sky above Istrana hosted what is remembered as the first great air battle in history: dozens of aircraft fought one another over the fields west of Treviso, while the Piave front ran only a few kilometres away. The village lay behind the lines, with an infirmary in the main settlement and an airfield at Sala linked to the name of Francesco Baracca.

That airfield never went away: today it is the base of the 51st Wing, and it also hosted an unusual race, when in 1981 a Formula One Ferrari ran against a fighter jet along the runway. But Istrana is also the Via Postumia, laid out in 147 BC, which still cuts straight across the land north of Sala, and Villa Lattes, a house-museum of 1715 designed by Giorgio Massari.
