Saint Martin, patron of Morgano
📅 Every year, on 11 November; the Carmine feast used to fall on 16 July
Morgano celebrates Saint Martin on 11 November.
A legend recorded in the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili has it that Murgania lived here, the daughter of the Roman consul Lelio Silero, so beautiful that people took her for Venus and raised a temple to her. The name, more modestly, comes from a medieval personal name, Mergano, and the first reliable records date from the twelfth century and concern the church of San Martino. Morgano is also a scattered comune: its seat is not in the village that gives it its name but in Badoere, which grew up around the market opened in 1689 beside the barchessa of Angelo Badoer's villa.
The rest was done by water. Between the Sile and the Zero, in a country of springs and clay, the landscape was dug out by the brick kilns: the Napoleonic land register of 1810 records one belonging to the Basadonna family in the Settimo district, and where the workmen cut the crèa, the clay, the buse were left behind, deep pits turned into marsh and full today of water lilies, coots and herons. Between 1830 and 1848, when the Austrian administration pushed the local roads forward, the gravel was dragged up from the riverbed, and a trade was born, the abboccatori, who worked from a raft with a sieve-shovel called a baiòn. On the bank, near the wooden bridge, a sixteenth-century wayside shrine is dedicated to Saint Christopher, invoked against floods.
