Monastier di Treviso

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,087 · Postal code: 31050

The name is the monastery: the Benedictine abbey was founded in 958 in a marshy, wooded place, thanks to the donations of Otto I, who would become emperor a few years later. In 1017 Henry II confirmed its privileges and set a fine of a hundred pounds of gold on anyone who violated them, while the patriarch of Aquileia gave it twenty warehouses in the river port of Pero. Closed between 1449 and 1479 for want of monks, it was reborn when San Giorgio Maggiore of Venice took it over, rebuilt it and set in the central courtyard a great roundel with the arms of its own saint: so that everyone could see at once whose it now was.

In 1797, when Napoleon confiscated San Giorgio Maggiore, its abbot Bonaventura Venier took refuge here with a few monks; in August of the same year the order came to leave Monastier as well. Among the abbey's treasures was a canvas by Vittore Carpaccio of Saint George killing the dragon, now in Venice. In 1837 the monastery was bought by the Ninni family, Venetian but originally from Greece, who still live in it. One oddity: the seat of the comune is not at Monastier but in the hamlet of Fornaci.
