Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus, patrons of Fossalta di Piave

In 1493 Venice had the Fossetta dug, a canal running from the edge of the lagoon at Portegrandi to where piazza Matteotti now stands, widening there into a small harbour: that harbour at once became the new centre of the village, with houses and shops around it. The canal served above all to supply Venice, and milk and bread passed along it every day — the bread because the bakers had been moved out of the city for fear of fires.
To protect the lagoon from the silt of the Piave, between 1534 and 1543 the Venetian Republic built the Argine di San Marco along the right bank, higher than the one opposite: from then on most of the floods went to the other side. After Caporetto, in the autumn of 1917, the front reached the Piave and Fossalta was evacuated; among those who fought here were the ragazzi del '99, called up at eighteen. In 1981 they came back for a national gathering, raised a monument to peace on the Argine Regio, and the comune made every one of them an honorary citizen.
