San Zenone degli Ezzelini

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 7,391 · Postal code: 31020

The Ezzelini who keep turning up all over the Veneto came to their end here. After Ezzelino III was defeated in 1259, his brother Alberico shut himself in the castle of San Zenone with his family; a league of Guelph cities besieged him and on 26 August 1260 took the place: he was tortured and killed, and his wife and children with him. The village still bears their name.

The family had come to Italy in 1036 in the train of the emperor Conrad the Salian, and had received in fief the villages at the foot of Monte Grappa. On the town's arms is the castle tower and, above it, an ostrich with a horseshoe in its beak: that was the Ezzelini crest. Every July the village re-enacts the siege.
