Saints Peter and Paul, patrons of the Roccolo of Villa Negri-Piovene
📅 Every year, on 29 June
Mussolente celebrates Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June, in the church dedicated to them.
People have been arguing about the name of Mussolente for two centuries. Some derive it from Misquilen, the word carved on the Roman sarcophagus of Gaius Vettonius; others explain it through the Germanic musso plus lente, marshy land, which is what this belt of springs was before it was channelled. A deed of 1226 calls it Musculento.
The philologist Dante Olivieri changed his mind three times: he rejected the theory in 1903, accepted it a few years later in the face of Salvioni's arguments, and in 1960 ended by filing Mussolente among the uncertain etymologies. In 1149 the bishop of Belluno granted the village in fief to Ezzelino I da Romano, and it stayed with the family until their fall in 1260. In the hamlet of Casoni, during the Great War, there was an airfield.
