Cassola

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 14,128 · Postal code: 36022

At Cassola the town hall is not in the largest centre. The village that gives the comune its name is Cassola, but the one where most people live is San Giuseppe, also called Termine di Cassola, which has its own detached municipal office and the library; and its name comes from a church begun in 1950 and consecrated to Saint Joseph. The comune's name, on the other hand, is far older: it appears in 1085 as Casasola, and in today's form in 1297. Where it comes from is debated: some read «casa sola», the lone house, later contracted to ca' sola, and others see in it an estate that belonged to a Cassius.

In 924 Berengar I gave jurisdiction over this countryside to Sibicone, bishop of Padua, the same man to whom in those years he also entrusted Marostica, with the obligation to build castles against the Hungarians. Then came Bassano, Vicenza, the Ezzelini, and finally Venice. War reached this place late but very close: after Caporetto the front settled on the Piave and on Monte Grappa, and Cassola found itself in the front line. The war memorial was put up in a hurry: work began on 18 April 1920 and it was unveiled on 9 May, three weeks later. The town's coat of arms, requested from the king in 1910, arrived only in 1927.
