Segusino

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,941 · Postal code: 31040

Segusino appears for the first time in 983, in a document by which the bishop of Vicenza gave «in Secusino caxale unum» to a monastery just sacked by the Hungarians. Of the castle of Mirabello, which stood on the border with Valdobbiadene, nothing remains: only a parchment. The Great War carried off almost all the village's memory: with the front on the Piave the population was evacuated.

In 1882, within the farming colonisation scheme wanted by the Mexican government, more than two hundred people from Segusino left for Mexico. Many ended up at Chipilo, in the state of Puebla, where Veneto is still spoken today, after nearly a century and a half. Segusino and Chipilo have been twinned since 1982; recent research shows, however, that the colony was founded by emigrants from many Veneto and Lombard villages, not by Segusino alone.
