Pederobba

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 7,573 · Postal code: 31040

At Pederobba stands the only French war memorial of the Great War in Italy. It was inaugurated in June 1937, together with the Italian one at Bligny in France, and holds the remains of a thousand soldiers who arrived here in April 1918 and fell on the Piave. The architect Camille Montagne designed an enormous wall, with the names in alphabetical order at its foot: only twelve bodies remained nameless.

In front of the wall stand two women in stone, Mother Italy and Mother France, holding together on their knees the body of their dead son. The village name, by contrast, is older and simpler: it comes from the Latin petra rubra, the red stone of the place. The Brentella, the canal that irrigates the plain below, was dug by the Venetians in 1436.
