Villorba

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 17,883 · Postal code: 31020

The name probably means poor village — villa orba — and for centuries there was farmland here and little else. Today at Catena, in the middle of that farmland, stands Fabrica: the Benetton group's research centre, designed by Tadao Andō, through which photographers and designers from all over the world have passed.

Villorba first appears in 982, among the fiefs of the Collalto; a parchment of 1005 describes the court of Piovenzano with its mills, woods, two chapels and a castle. Where the Postumia passed, armies passed too: in 1318 Cangrande della Scala put the village to the sword. The Venetian villas remain, and the springs of the Fontane Bianche. There are 17,883 residents.
