The coat of arms of Carbonera tells the whole comune: a castle with three towers, which are the three castles of the territory — that of Carbonera in the middle, taller, and at the sides those of Pezzan and of Vascon — set on a black field, which stands for the Roman road Claudia Augusta Altinate. The arms too, however, had their correction: the town council approved a version in 1966, with the three towers of equal height and two green trees at the sides, but the prefect changed it on the suggestion of the State Archive of Treviso, and the good version is the one approved the following year. The name, on the other hand, comes from the Latin carbonaria, place of charcoal: from the woods that in the Middle Ages were burned to make charcoal.

The first written records date from the year one thousand. In 1115 the Cluniac friars were given the monastery of San Giacomo Apostolo, and in a parchment of 21 March 1121 one Oderico di Carbonera appears as witness to a donation of land to the church of Santa Fosca in Treviso. On this territory thirteen protected Venetian villas are counted: among them villa Tiepolo Passi, whose private chapel was built in 1774 after a fire had destroyed the church that stood on the estate. The frescoes and the stuccoes are attributed to Giovan Battista Canal, Canaletto's nephew, while the ceiling is the work of Tiepolo's school.
