There are at least five explanations for the name of Dolo, and none has won. One derives it from dolon, the Latin word for a kind of tower — and there really was a tower at Dolo, named in a document of 1241 and drawn on a fifteenth-century map. Another traces it to the Paduan family of the Dotto dei Dauli, and in its support there is the town's coat of arms, which recalls precisely theirs. Another again to a man, Dolo Dotto, who had holdings here: in the documents the area is called the «volta di Dolo Dotto». The first certain record of the name, in any case, is late: it is in the Diaries of Marin Sanudo, under the date 30 September 1513.

The parish, on the other hand, the town had to bargain for. In 1572, taking advantage of bishop Nicolò Ormaneto's visit to the parish of Fiesso, the inhabitants got him to promise them the cure of souls on condition that the church be enlarged; in 1576 the plague arrived, which Dolo came through well by entrusting itself to Saint Roch, and it was to him that the church was dedicated. In 1579 bishop Federico Corner sent don Camillo Ronconi to settle the matter: he finished the works and laid down that the rector be maintained with 16 ducats paid by the parish priests of Sambruson and Fiesso and 44 by the people of Dolo. The church was completed in 1580, and the year after it was born. Meanwhile, on the Isola Bassa where the canal splits in two, mills, jetties and boatyards had grown up.
