Fossò

Province: Venice · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,786 · Postal code: 30030

The name comes from Fossatum, a ditch: probably a minor branch of the Brenta. About the origins of the church there is a small mystery: a contract of 1085 names a church of San Martino, but in 1130 the bishop of Padua speaks of the chapel of San Bartolomeo, and it is not known whether it is the same one or whether there were two and one was abandoned. Today there are two churches again, both dedicated to San Bartolomeo: the old one and the one built in 1957, facing each other across the square.

In 1281 the commune of Padua counted forty-one families here, some three hundred people, but with higher taxes than the neighbouring villages: the place mattered. In 1380, during the war between Padua and Venice, nine boats loaded with supplies for the Venetian troops were sunk in a branch of the Brenta. Today Fossò lives on shoes: the local firms work for the great fashion labels.
