Saint Charles Borromeo, patron of the villas of the Brenta Riviera
📅 Every year, on 4 November
Fiesso d'Artico celebrates Saint Charles Borromeo on 4 November.
The village was simply called Fiesso, from the Latin flexus, the bend: it stands on a curve of the Brenta. Artico is a man's surname, Angelo Maria Artico, the water magistrate who designed the last diversion of the river to take the village out of the floods; in 1867 the council decided to add it to the name, and there it has stayed.
The first time Fiesso appears in writing is in a deed of 1025: countess Edvige, widow of count Ingelpreto, sells forty-four farmsteads to the abbot of Sant'Ilario, and the investiture is made by handing over a knife, a staff, a glove and a branch. From Venice people came here by burchiello, the boat that was also a floating drawing room.
