Noventa di Piave

Province: Venice · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,843 · Postal code: 30020

For centuries Noventa lived on two things: the port on the Piave, at the last navigable point of the river, and horses. They bought them in eastern Europe, above all in Hungary, and sold them on in the main Italian markets. The municipal arms have kept them, together with the wavy band of the river and seven roundels, which are the seven colmelli into which the territory was divided in the days of the Venetian Republic.

In the autumn of 1917, after Caporetto, the front settled on the Piave and Noventa emptied: the people were evacuated, the town offices were moved to Rome, and the bell tower of San Mauro was pulled down by the people of Noventa themselves, so that the Austro-Hungarians could not use it as an observation post. A year of fighting destroyed almost the whole village. The damage was such that the government advised against rebuilding; the inhabitants decided otherwise, and Noventa was rebuilt from 1919.
