Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot
📅 Every year, on 17 January
On 17 January Bevilacqua celebrates its patron Saint Anthony the Abbot, to whom the town's church is dedicated; the Castello di Bevilacqua also stands here.
The village bears the name of a family, and the family that of a place: on the arms there are a wing, the emblem of Ala in Trentino where the Bevilacqua came from, and a castle. It was begun in 1336 by Guglielmo I Bevilacqua, lieutenant of the Scaligeri in Padua, and finished by his son Francesco, who was given full jurisdiction over the stronghold and the lands around it, hunting, fishing and exemption from taxes.
From a fortress the castle became a villa in the sixteenth century, its interior wholly remodelled by Michele Sanmicheli; in 1848 the Austrians set fire to it, and the one who put it back on its feet, in neo-Gothic dress, was Felicita, the last of the Bevilacqua, with her husband Giuseppe La Masa. In 1932 the family gave it to the State to be turned into a rest home. In front of it still stands the post station where horses were changed.
