Boschi Sant'Anna

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,454 · Postal code: 37040

The Venetians came up here for the trunks: they needed them to drive into the mud of the lagoon and build on top, and the Adige carried them down. It was they who named the two centres, Sant'Anna and San Marco, after the saints that counted in Venice. The wood was called the Bosco di Porto, and the floods of the Adige had made it.

On the fourteenth of July 1507 Venice made the place a community with the title of vicariate. On the coat of arms the blue band is the Adige, the tree is the wood, and the star has six points for the six centres that make up the comune. The old bell tower, twenty-five metres high, was brought down by lightning in 1852; the new one, finished in 1864, is thirty-five metres, and on top of it stands an angel.
