Antonio Salieri was born in Legnago in 1750: the composer Vienna claimed, whom legend unjustly set against Mozart, has his theatre here — the Salieri — keeping his name and a full season. The town was one of the strongholds of the Austrian Quadrilateral, and the surviving medieval tower recalls a long military history on the Adige.
The plain around grows Verona's vialone nano IGP rice, which local trattorias turn into risotto with salamella sausage. Among river, paddies and musical memory, Legnago is agricultural Veneto with an opera-house calling card.

Legnago celebrates Saint Martin, bishop, on 11 November, in the neoclassical cathedral dedicated to him in Piazza della Libertà, rebuilt between the 18th and 19th centuries and inaugurated in 1814; a 17th-century church in the hamlet of Vigo also bears his name.
