Between 920 and 936 the monks of Nonantola found a way to defend Nogara without paying soldiers: they let out their houses to local people on condition that, in exchange, they protect the stronghold and the church of San Silvestro from Hungarian raids. The castle had been authorised by King Berengar around 900, and stood inside a moat filled with water from the Tartaro.

That moat proved its worth: when Henry IV besieged Nogara, in the days of Matilda of Canossa, the villagers held out and the emperor had to lift the siege; the monk Donizo put it into verse. Richilde, first wife of Boniface of Canossa, had also been buried here. Of the castle, burnt in 1509, fragments survive inside Palazzo Marogna, whose piers were designed by Sanmicheli.
