Salizzole

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 3,745 · Postal code: 37056

The name comes from the willow, the Latin salix, which must once have covered this ground among the marshes; the sources hold that reading the soundest because the other villages of the lower Veronese plain are likewise named after the trees that grew there, and the coat of arms is indeed canting. The castle has two towers of different ages joined by a central block: the crenellated western one is twelfth-century, while the eastern one with its gateway is the work of Alberto I della Scala at the end of the thirteenth. It was the house of the family of Cangrande della Scala's mother, Verde of the counts of Salizzole; today it holds the town library and the public hall.

At Valmorsel there is a church the inhabitants built for themselves around 1951, gathering what they had — above all eggs and flour — to pay for the building materials: which is why they call it the little church kneaded with eggs. It is as plain as can be: a small rose window, a single door, one nave and no bell tower; inside, an altar of Valpolicella marble and a wooden Saint Roch taken from a wayside shrine of Valmorsel. Declared unsafe in the nineteen-eighties and closed, it was restored at the end of the nineties and reopened in 2005. The fields around are part of the growing area of the Vialone Nano rice of Verona, irrigated with resurgence water.
