Concamarise

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,078 · Postal code: 37050

The village appears for the first time in a document of 1144, under the name Conchamaris, when the emperor Conrad II guaranteed protection to the abbey of Nonantola. As to what it means there are three answers: a popular legend translates it as sea shell; another reading joins conca, a hollow, to an old Venetian word for pond or marsh, of which there were plenty here; the most accepted hypothesis instead derives the second half from the Latin meridies, midday, in which case it would be the land where one stops at noon. On its coat of arms the municipality chose the legend: there is a golden shell, and below it the wavy bands of the marsh.

Concamarise declared itself a free commune in 1225, but the independence did not last: the De Palatio came, then the Sanbonifacio, then the Verità, the Malaspina, the Montanari. The old parish church of Santi Lorenzo e Stefano was abandoned in 1962, when the parish moved into a new church, round and domed, designed and donated by the architect Giovanni Fregno; to make room for it they had to shift the votive shrine that gives the neighbourhood its name. The old church stood empty for decades, until the municipality bought it from the diocese and restored it.
