Feast of Saint Zeno
📅 Every year, on 21 May
On 21 May San Zeno di Montagna, a municipality of 1,367 inhabitants in the province of Verona, celebrates its patron Saint Zeno; in autumn the Marrone di San Zeno PDO chestnut festival is held.
The village stands high on Monte Baldo, above the Veronese shore of Lake Garda, and within a few hundred metres of height the climate changes: down below the olive grows, with dry summers and mild winters, while above nine hundred metres the snow holds for more than a month. Sixty-two per cent of the territory is woodland, twenty-eight is meadow and pasture; the chestnut groves are the prized crop.
From the lake breezes and small currents rise all the time: they make the clouds that in summer cling to the peaks of the Baldo, and carry the Mediterranean climate up certain narrow, steep valleys. The mountain itself was shaped by karst and by the Garda glacier, which in the Quaternary advanced and withdrew several times: hence the glacio-karst landscapes. In the pools the yellow-bellied toad still lives, a species ever rarer in the Alps.
