In the year 810 a document names a fundus Follonis here. Follo, in medieval Latin, is the fulling mill: the mechanism driven by a water wheel that beat wool with two wooden hammers to felt it. It is the oldest attestation of the word in Italy — the next appear in Abruzzo only in 962 — and it tells us that cloth was being worked on these streams as early as the time of Charlemagne.

Above the village rises Monte Baldo, which in the last ice age stayed clear of the glaciers: its slopes behaved like an island, and plants survived there that have vanished from the other Alpine mountains. The plain of Caprino lay precisely in the free space between two glacier fronts.
