Tregnago

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,926 · Postal code: 37039

Tregnago has 4,926 inhabitants in the middle Val d'Illasi, on the slopes of the Lessini, and there are three theories about the name: a Latin personal name, or Traniacus from the three castles of the territory, or Terminiacum, the boundary — because the edge of the empire towards the Raetic world ran through here. What is certain is the water: while the rest of the valley went short of it, three little valleys with their torrents converge here, and already at the start of the sixteenth century the water of the Pisocco spring, more than a kilometre outside, had been channelled right into the village.

The village can be read from its plan. Two almost parallel streets, the old via Maestra and the old via Pezzòlo, with the alleys that join them in between; along them the peasant houses, all facing west, and among them the older houses and the villas that families from the city had built from the seventeenth century on, which instead look south. The pieve of San Martino goes back to Frankish times, and the church of Santa Maria was built beside it after the earthquakes of 1116 and 1182 had badly damaged it.
