Cazzano di Tramigna

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,555 · Postal code: 37030

The river Tramigna is born in the middle of the village, from a spring they call the Lago della Mora, or Fontanone. The name Cazzano may come from Cassianum, the estate of the gens Cassia (at Soave the tombstone of a Cassia Maxima turned up), or from a word for a hunting wood: hence the stag on the arms. «Di Tramigna» was added in 1867, to tell it apart from the other Cazzano in Italy.

In 1439, when the castle of Illasi fell through treason, Giovanni Pompei gathered peasants at Tregnago, came up the val Tramigna and fell on Piccinino's Milanese, who had to withdraw. The Pompei got the fief, in 1509, the title of counts and the right to collect the duties and to do justice themselves: against their high-handedness the people of Cazzano protested all the way to Venice.
