Illasi

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 5,302 · Postal code: 37031

Illasi has 5,302 inhabitants at the mouth of the valley of the same name, at the foot of the Lessini, and the name perhaps comes from Illasius or Gelasius, a Roman veteran to whom a plot of land was assigned. In 2007, while digging for a building site at Arano, a necropolis came to light with sixty-two tombs holding seventy-three burials, dated between the end of the third and the beginning of the second millennium before Christ: the bodies in a foetal position, almost all turned to the west.

On the edge of the necropolis, deeper down and therefore older, lies a cobbled pavement in the shape of an isosceles triangle, eighteen metres at the base and twenty-five along the sides, with three burials without grave goods on the base line. Similar structures are known only at Sion, at Aosta and at Velturno: some read in it the shape of a dagger, a symbol of power, and some the prow of a ship carrying the dead towards the sunset. Above the village stands the castle, a keep flanked by a cassero: who built it, before the Scaligeri, is unknown.
