Campiglia dei Berici

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,791 · Postal code: 36020

At the beginning of the thirteenth century the church of Vicenza was deep in debt to usurers and had to sell much of what it owned. In 1207 bishop Uberto II sold the castle of Campiglia and the whole village to the canons of the cathedral; ten years later the castle passed to a Vicenza nobleman, Pace Repeta.

Ezzelino took the castle, and the wars of the fourteenth century finished it. Yet in 1363, and again in 1388, the bishops were still investing the Repeta with «the villa, the court, the territory and the castle of Campiglia»: the castle had long since gone, and its ruins had already given the place the name it still carries, le Motte. The deed was probably just repeating the old formula. In 1672, on the ruins of the Palladian villa of the Repeta, another was built.
