Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August Agugliaro, a municipality of 1,422 inhabitants in the province of Vicenza, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo.
The name probably comes from aquillarium, that is from water: the village is cut by canals, and before the Vicentines broke the bank to the harm of the Paduans the Bacchiglione ran through here as well. A deed of the bishop of Vicenza of 1306 describes a walled castle at the edge of the village and, around it, a settlement of twenty-three little houses: it was abandoned, perhaps because the water came back too often.
In 1454 the county passed from the Pigafetta to the Fracanzani, vicars of Orgiano; of the family of Magellan's chronicler the barchesse remain here. The best-known villa, though, is the one Andrea Palladio built in 1574 for Biagio Saraceno, one of his earliest and least showy: today it belongs to a British foundation, the Landmark Trust.
