Cartigliano

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 3,802 · Postal code: 36050

The name comes from the fundus Cartilianus, the estate of the gens Cartilia, a family of brick-makers, and the Brenta — then the Medoacus — used to run east of the village until the flood of 589 changed its course. On the twenty-fourth of September 899 the Hungarians, whose surrender Berengar had refused, fell upon his camp while his soldiers were quietly bivouacking here, and destroyed the army; the dead of that battle lie under a rise that the village still calls the mound of the Hungarians. After the victory the invaders went back up northern Italy, sacking one city after another.

Villa Morosini-Cappello, now the town hall, was built after 1581 with a portico on the ground floor and an Ionic loggia on the main floor that runs round all four sides, and with two projecting bodies, one towards the garden and one towards the Brenta: it is the only Venetian villa with two fronts, and it had no imitators. In its courtyard, on the twenty-fourth of September 1863, Francesco V of Este, the last duke of Modena, formally dissolved the Brigata Estense: of the nearly two thousand seven hundred men still enlisted, more than a thousand asked and obtained to join the Austrian army. The ceremony was photographed by the Venetian Fortunato Antonio Perini, and those images are among the first taken in the Veneto and in Italy. In the parish church the old presbytery was frescoed by Jacopo Bassano with his son, in 1575.
