The patron of Gessopalena is Saint Valentine, celebrated on 14 February.
Since 1965 the town has held on Good Friday a procession devoted to the death of Christ, which over the years has drawn pilgrims from a good part of the province of Chieti: the old houses of the old village serve as the set for a sacred costumed theatrical re-enactment with local actors, from the Last Supper on Holy Thursday to the Crucifixion. Another tradition is the «Carnevale morte», the funeral of Carnival, in which the pre-Lenten festivity is personified.
