Montefalcone nel Sannio

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,650 · Postal code: 86033

Of the church's three bells only one escaped the fascist requisitions of the 1940s: the big one, eighteen hundredweight, cast in 1708 by the Desiati of Agnone. Another, the French one, was recast in 1967 by the Marinelli using the bronze of a bell that came from France to replace the one taken away.

The Gothic portal of the entrance is thirteenth-century and probably comes from the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro, which stood on the border with Castelmauro. On Monte Rocchetta are the remains of cyclopean Samnite walls: some identify them with ancient Maronea, which the proconsul Marcellus took in 212 BC. The nel Sannio was added in 1869. There are 1,650 residents.
